The Space Between

If you are concerned that you could be at risk for a neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s disease or related conditions—whether due to your genetics, family history, environmental exposures, or if you have an associated prodromal condition such as REM Sleep Behavior Disorder—you likely have many questions. This program is designed to provide you with the space to ask questions and find actionable steps on how you might be able to manage the uncertainty and protect your brain health.

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder, An Early Sign of PD?

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder in which you physically act out your dreams unknowingly while asleep. RBD can be a potential prodromal marker of Parkinson's disease (PD). Join us and Michele Tagliati, MD FAAN, Director of Movement Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA to learn more about why RBD could indicate risk of future neurogenerative disease.

Watch anytime, anyplace.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t attend live. You can learn brain health watch-outs and protective habits from wherever you are with the Proactive Brain Health video library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get to know more about the Proactive Brain Health Alliance.

PMD Alliance is a national nonprofit organization that primarily works to connect and educate those affected by movement disorders and those who care for them. If you’re not familiar with movement disorders, they include conditions like Parkinson disease, essential tremor, Lewy Body dementia, tardive dyskinesia, and more, with a wide range of symptoms and treatments. People with movement disorders need to proactively manage their brain health, but they’re not the only ones! We’re bringing this project to everyone who cares about keeping their brain in shape because everyone can benefit from it.

As advanced diagnostic tools and research allow for more people to be identified who may be at risk for future neurological disease, they ask the question - what can I do now to increase my chances of staying healthy as I age?

The Proactive Brain Health Alliance was created to answer that question, inviting all those interested in forming brain-healthy habits to learn together. We envision a world in which advanced diagnostic tools and a deeper understanding of the causes of neurodegenerative disease inspire all brains to pursue protective habits through evidence-based education, targeted action, and supportive community.

No. Someone suggesting you engage in Proactive Brain Health does not mean you have an illness or will develop one.

You may have been referred here because you have signs that you could develop a condition that would require treatment from a doctor. This could include a positive test result, family history, or symptoms like:

  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Tremor
  • Slowed movements (bradykinesia)
  • Constipation
  • Abnormal mood changes
  • Rigidity
  • Issues with posture or coordination

Having one or more of these signs isn’t necessarily cause for concern, as long as you have discussed them with your doctor.

Prodromal conditions are related illnesses or symptoms that can indicate you may be at risk of future neurogenerative disease. They include REM sleep behavior disorder, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), loss of sense of smell (hyposmia), mood disorder, gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation, and more.

If you have a movement disorder or suspect you may have one, you may want to check out PMD Alliance’s main website. There you can find resources including live and recorded educational presentations, online support communities, and support group leader training.
